Choose your rib type and enter your guest count and ribs-per-person target to see how many racks to buy.
Different rib cuts come with different average bone counts per rack: baby back ribs typically have 10–13 ribs per rack, St. Louis-style spare ribs typically have 11–13, and beef back ribs typically have 7–8. This calculator uses a typical average rib count for your chosen cut, then divides your total ribs needed (guests × ribs per person) by that average to estimate how many racks to buy.
Source: Average rib counts per rack are based on standard USDA meat industry cut descriptions and pork-industry (National Pork Board) serving guidance.
Typically 10 to 13 ribs, with 12 or 13 most common — this calculator uses 12 as a standard average.
Usually 11 to 13 ribs after trimming, similar in count to a baby back rack but larger and meatier per bone.
About half a rack (roughly 6 ribs) per person is a common planning figure as a main course; adjust up for big eaters or down if ribs are one of several dishes.
